YUK FUN was founded in 2014 by design duo Lucy Cheung and Patrick Gildersleeves who met at university studying art & design. Lucy cuts and sews all their womens' clothing at their home studio. Patrick does all the doodling, drawing and illustrating wherever he is, 24/7. Since 2016 they both screen print jumpers and tote bags together.
Can you tell us about yourselves and what you're working on?
We are YUK FUN and we design and make illustrated clothing, bags and accessories. We are a two person operation - Lucy cuts and sews our womens' clothing and Patrick does all of the illustrations that feature on our designs. We are currently working on a new collection featuring our fave favourite things. It's top secret so we can't tell you anymore!
What are your backgrounds?
We both studied art and design in Leeds, UK. Patrick has been doing his illustrations since then, while Lucy has focused on making and designing clothes.
Where do you usually work from?
We work from our home studio in Portslade-by-Sea in East Sussex in the UK, we like to call it YUK FUN Towers. We're currently in the process of renovating our studio so we can't show you any pics of the workspace!
Who do you dream of collaborating with one day and why?
We would really love to make an animation one day so Hayao Miyazaki would be a dream to work with. It'd be fun to imagine the world our characters would live in and what they'd do all day.
What is the best place in the world to be a maker?
We love making stuff where we are! Portslade is in the suburbs of Brighton, UK, so there are plenty of gigs, exhibitions and interesting events going on. We're also a short walk away from the sea and the South Downs National Park which is great for walks.
What age were you when you first started making anything? What did you make?
We both have fond memories of doing lots of drawing when we were children. Lucy used to draw Sonic the hedgehog, underwater mermaid scenes and a cross section of Noah's ark showing all the animals. Patrick was more into drawing dinosaurs, birds and football matches.
When you're running low on motivation, what do you do to pick yourself up?
We like to go for restorative walks along the beach. The beach is quite deserted where we live so it's nice and peaceful. You can often spot a fox foraging on the beach in the evening. The best careers advice we’ve ever received? We never got any, we're just making it up as we go along!
